What is a Social Media Strategy?

A social media strategy is a plan of action that businesses use to create and maintain their social media presence. This can include anything from creating content, to scheduling posts, to engaging with followers.

If the very thought of a social media strategy leaves you feeling panicked and overwhelmed, you’re not alone.  Creating and executing a social media strategy can be daunting, but we’re here to help!

Why is a Social Media Strategy Important?

Having a social media strategy is important because it helps businesses to focus their efforts and ensure that they are getting the most out of their time on social media. A well-thought-out social media strategy can help businesses to increase brand awareness, build relationships with customers, and drive sales.

Not only that, planning out your content and having a game plan will save you so much time in the long run. And will prevent you from putting out last minute content that isn’t your best work.

Creating a Strong Social Media Strategy

Now that we’ve covered the what’s and why’s, let’s move on to some tips on how to create a strong social media strategy so you can go into the holiday season and end of year with a strong plan in place!

Schedule Your Posts

Consistency is one of the most important aspects of having a solid social media presence. When you are consistent with your posting, you will see better results in terms of engagement and reach. Posting randomly and sporadically will not only confuse your followers but will also make it difficult for you to measure the success of your efforts.

The best way to be consistent is to schedule your posts ahead of time. This can be done using a tool like Hootsuite or Sprout Social. Both platforms offer free and paid plans that allow you to bulk schedule your content, meaning you can sit down once a week or month and plan out all of your content in one go. This will save you so much time and energy in the long run!

If you want to take things one step further, you can also create an editorial calendar. An editorial calendar is a document that outlines all of the content you plan to post on social media, as well as when you plan to post it. This is an excellent way to get a bird’s eye view of your content strategy and ensure that you are posting a mix of different types of content (photos, videos, blog posts, etc.).

Focus on Your Blog Posts

If you’ve been slacking in the blog department, now is the time to get back on track or to get started! Blogging is an excellent way to drive traffic to your website and improve your SEO. But as far as a social media strategy goes, blogging will provide you with fresh content to share on your social media channels. And we all know that fresh content is key!

Don’t have time to write a blog post? No problem! You can always repurpose old blog posts by creating social media graphics or short video clips. This is an excellent way to breathe new life into your old content and ensure that you are always sharing fresh, relevant content with your followers.

You Don't Need to Do It All

Figure out a couple social media platforms you want to focus on and put all of your energy into those. Trying to be present on every single social media platform is a recipe for burnout and will likely lead to you doing a subpar job across the board.

If you want to see real results, focus your efforts on the platforms that are most popular with your target audience and that will provide you with the best ROI. If your target audience is teen girls, LinkedIn is hardly the platform you want to be spending your time on. Figure out where your target audience spends time online, and be there.

Plan Out Your Content

This goes hand-in-hand with scheduling your posts. When you sit down to plan out your content, take some time to brainstorm different types of content you want to share. A mix of photos, videos, blog posts, infographics, etc. will help to keep things interesting for your followers and ensure that you are providing them with a variety of content.

A good idea is to break the content down month by month.  For example, in November you could focus on holiday-themed content and in December you could share your year-in-review. This will help to keep things fresh and ensure that your content is always relevant to what is going on in the world.

Planning out your content gives you the times you need to book photographers,  videographers, etc. well in advance so that you’re not scrambling at the last minute to get things done. Start brainstorming some content ideas for the upcoming year and mapping out when you want to post them. This will help you to stay on track and finish off the year strong!

Measure Your Results

The only way to know if your social media strategy is working is to measure your results. This can be done using a variety of tools, such as Google Analytics or Sprout Social. These platforms will allow you to see how much traffic your website is getting from social media, as well as what type of content is performing the best.

This is valuable information that you can use to adjust your content strategy moving forward because at the end of the day, you want your social media platforms to be leading customers back to your website to make a purchase. If what you’re doing on social media isn’t converting, then it’s time to change things up!

Finish Out the Year Strong!

By following these tips, you can create a great social media strategy that will help you finish off the year strong. Just remember to focus on your goals, plan out your content, and measure your results so that you can make adjustments as needed.
