Facebook's Ad Text Checker is Gone... But We Have a Tool to Help.

If you have been advertising on Facebook for a while, you’ve likely heard of the 20% text rule for ad graphics.

This rule restricted text on an ad image’s area to less than 20%.

If your image’s text exceeded this threshold, your ad would be denied or would be penalized during the ad auction and delivery.

Facebook Ad Text Checker

Running into this denial was extremely frustrating for advertisers as they would have to recreate their graphics and enter the ad review process again to see if it passed.

To help ease advertisers’ frustration with this process, Facebook created the ‘text overlay’ tool.

This Facebook ad text checker allowed advertisers to easily upload an ad image and instantly know whether the graphic aligned with the 20% limit before entering the ad review process.

So Long, Ad Checker

In September 2020, Facebook quietly removed the 20% text rule, along with the Ad Checker since it was no longer of use.

This change didn’t come with a large announcement from Facebook.

In fact, information about this restriction and the text overlay tool were discreetly removed from the platform.

Although this rule had been around for a very long time, this didn’t come as a huge surprise to long-term advertisers.

Facebook constantly analyzes data, collects feedback from advertisers and users, and implements changes to improve the user experience.

Plus, a lot of advertisers found this guideline to be a thorn in their side, so plenty of marketers were happy about this transition.

Does It Still Matter?

In short, absolutely.

Although it is no longer required by Facebook, it is highly recommended that advertisers still keep their ad image’s text to a minimum.

Research has shown that having little to no text on your graphic improves the performance of your ad.

When text is overcrowding your ad, users are likely to scroll right past them because they don’t want to stop what they’re doing and read that much information.

In fact, the more an advertisement looks like a native post in a user’s News Feed, the more likely users are to stop and see what the post has to say before even realizing it is an ad.

Best Practices for Facebook Ads

Following these best practices will help you create the most effective graphics for your Facebook ads, maximize engagement, and increase conversions.

  • Keep your text short, clear, and concise to get your message across effectively.
  • Avoid spreading text all over your image.
  • Make sure most of the text you use is in the body text instead of directly on the ad’s image.
  • Reduce font size but not so much that it is difficult to read.
  • Use captivating words such as “free,” “you,” “new,” and “instantly.”
  • A snippet of information on your image can capture the attention of users and entice them to click your call to action (CTA).
  • Ensure that your post-click landing page is loaded with information such as the features and benefits of your product or service.
